  12. Of the people that I see regularly, I have Amiga, PC and Mac owners, so
  13. this is a summary.

  15. If you want a game machine (ONLY) that gets them first, or if you have
  16. some PC software that you are required to use and want to be able to
  17. do some work at home, then get the best PC you can afford.  VESA video,
  18. minimum, PCI preferred.  IDE is OK, if compared to a non-bus master SCSI,
  19. or if you get a bus master PCI or VESA; the extended IDE on newer PCs
  20. doesn't have much trouble with 1G+ disks and the CDROM drives (ATAPI
  21. only) are cheaper and just as fast.  You'll probably have to have 16
  22. Mbytes of RAM, but be willing to buy a slower Pentium (or AmGen!) and
  23. spend more on the video and RAM if you have to trade off.

  25. Good all-'round machine, much simpler to set up, can run PC/Windows
  26. programs with, or without, hardware assist, faster clock-for-clock
  27. than the 'tel-family chips, multiple vendors - PowerPC mac.  There
  28. are some good deals on the 6200 now, but if you're not in a hurry,
  29. there's a new family due later this year that should be able to run
  30. your choice of Mac's OS, AIX (IBM UNIX variant), Solaris 2 (Sun UNIX
  31. variant), and NT.  They may be pricier at first, but should be more
  32. sustainable in the long run.

  34. If you've been happy with your Amiga, ask yourself why you want to
  35. change.  If it's just bragging rights, tell them that when their
  36. systems have real true multitasking operating systems, like yours
  37. does, and an interprocess communication mechanism even 10% as powerful
  38. as AREXX (the OLE, etc. doesn't begin to support the off-line
  39. inter-task capability or AREXX ports), then you'll have to consider
  40. buying something else.  If there are some applications that you
  41. want/need that aren't available on the Amiga, and don't look like
  42. they're going to be, then buy what runs those apps.
